The Pacific Judicial Council concludes its four-day conference at the Fiesta Resort and Spa today.
In the last general session of the gathering, there will be brief reports from each of the 10 jurisdictions on administrative team development since the PJC executive team training in Palau this February.
A farewell lunch and the official closing will be presided over by CNMI Supreme Court Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan.
On Wednesday, American Samoa Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Kruse was the day's master of ceremonies and the two morning sessions, focused on domestic violence adjudication, were led by Joan Zorza Esq., founding editor, Domestic Violence / Sexual Assault Report.
At lunch Matthew Gagelin, Esq., with the Joint Guam Program Office, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, spoke to an attentive audience including Saipan Bar Association and Chamber of Commerce members on the regional effects of the U.S. military buildup in Guam.
In the afternoon Kathleen M. Burch, associate professor at the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia, discussed the enforcement of judgments.
The final session of the day was an interactive discussion titled “Courts as Cultural Mediators in Domestic Violence” with panelists that included judges Kenneth Govendo, Aliksa Aliksa, Ramona Manglona, Honora E. Remengesau-Rudimch, Anita Sukola, Frances Tydingco-Gatewood, and Joan Zorza.
The Pacific Judicial Counsel is composed of the judiciaries of the CNMI, Guam, the Republic of Palau, American Samoa, and the Federated States of Micronesia. (PR)
