Tinian's Keli Manglona now owns a page in the history books of CNMI mixed martial arts.
Manglona of Trench Tech became the winner of the first title belt bout in the Commonwealth when he stopped Marianas Elite's Syl “The Deal” Teregeyo in their middleweight duel in Gorilla Warfare MMA's “Confrontation” on Saturday.
The Tinian fighter caught Teregeyo at the center of the ring, sat on him and released a flurry of punches to the head and body of the Marianas Elite bet. Teregeyo used both his hands to protect his head, but after a couple of minutes, he could no longer take more punishment from Manglona's hands and tapped the canvas at the 2:53 mark of the first round.
Early in the first round, Teregeyo dealt Manglona a low blow, forcing the latter to go to his corner for a five-minute break. Manglona quickly recovered and exchanged jabs and kicks with Teregeyo before catching him at the center of the canvas and eventually winning via tapout.
Manglona rushed to his cornermen Jason Tarkong and Cuki Alvarez and then climbed to one corner of the ring, raising his arms in triumph.
Manglona fought twice that night scoring a TKO win over Danny Fejeran at the 1:48 mark of the first round to set up a title belt match against Teregeyo. Teregeyo was in the first offering of the night and it took him 2:27 in the first round to beat Peter “The Dragon” Deleon Guerrero via arm-bar submission.
The featured fight of the night between Guam's Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck and the Philippines' Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang ended early with the former scoring an impressive knockout win with only eight seconds gone by in the first round.
When the opening bell sounded, both fighters quickly exchanged punches. With Tuck having a few inches advantage on reach against Folayang, the latter tried to dance away from the Guam fighter. However, Tuck caught Folayang near the left corner of the judges' row and slammed him hard on the canvas. The Filipino fighter had a bad fall and as if that was not enough, Tuck unleashed a couple of punches that later caused a cut to Folayang's lower cheek.
Before Tuck could inflict more damage to Folayang, referee Tony D'Angelo stepped in and stopped the fight. Tuck's cornermen and several supporters celebrated while medics and a ring doctor tried to revive Folayang, who was still down at the canvas and was unconscious for a few minutes. After 10 minutes, Folayang eventually stood up to the relief of the crowd and hugged his tormentor before going back to the dugout to seek further medical attention.
There were eight other fights at the packed Royal Taga Hall of the World Resort Hotel and majority of them ended early.
In the third fight, Tabby” Jay” Muna recorded a rear-naked choke submission win over Marianas Elite's Martin Ayuyu in the 2:39 mark of the first round.
Lionel Borja, also of Marianas Elite bet, was victorious in his fight against Shawn Ogre and at it took only 55 seconds in the first round for the former to nail a rear-naked choke win.
Marianas Elite's Derrick Aughenbaugh had a winning debut in Gorilla after a TKO triumph over Jack Crisostimo. After Aughenbaugh dominated the bout in the first round, Crisostimo sat out to his corner too long and decided he could no longer continue the fight.
Organizers of the weekend event took a break after five fights and when action resumed, Predators' Nate “The Terrible” Flores and Maitai “The Charger” Charley had the crowd up on their feet, as two fighters exchanged solid blows and grappling techniques for three minutes.
Flores got the better end of that exchange, leaving a small cut on the upper right eyebrow of Charley. The two fighters were at it again in the second round before Flores caught Charley in the corner and threw a barrage of punches, ending the match in the 48-second mark of that round via tapout.
In one of the two heavyweight bouts, Charles “The Predator” Aiken recorded a win via referee stoppage in the 2:49 mark in first round against Marianas Elite's Myron “The Natural” San Nicolas.
The other heavyweight match took only 13 seconds to finish when Kelvin “The Big Hit” Fitial won over Mike “Ogre” Davis via rear-naked choke submission.
