Li Zhong Ren, the gunman in Friday's shooting rampage in Kannat Tabla and Marpi, fired a variety of guns more than 40 times, including the single bullet he used to kill himself, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.
DPS spokesman Jason Tarkong said the 42-year-old Li fired a .223 rifle eight times during the shooting at the former shooting range in Kannat Tabla.
The gunman also fired a .410 shotgun in Kannat Tabla, but that Tarkong said he has not seen the report on how many times the weapon was fired.
The Kannat Tabla fatalities were identified as Enrique B. Naputi, 26; Richard Naputi Borja, 22; Korina Deleon Guerrero Naputi, 1; and Vince Larry Rosario II, 5.
Dolores Naputi, who turned 4 years old that day, survived with a gunshot wound on the left chest. She is recovering at the Commonwealth Health Center's Pediatric Ward and is expected to be discharged later this week.
Tarkong said the guns used to kill the victims were a .223 rifle and a .410 shotgun.
It was Kollin Deleon Guerrero, the common-law wife of Enrique Naputi, who reported the shooting to DPS Central Friday at 12:02pm.
Kollin Deleon Guerrero, 26, had just arrived from a store where she bought food in preparation for the birthday celebration of their daughter, Dolores, at their home.
The residence of Kollin Deleon Guerrero and Enrique Naputi is located next to the shooting range. Korina, the 1-year-old fatality, was the couple's other daughter.
Marpi shooting
After the Kannat Tabla shooting, Li drove a white Toyota Previa van toward the Marpi area.
When Li arrived at the Last Command Post, he parked the van on the roadway, then fired 30 rounds from a .223 rifle at a group of Korean tourists who were sightseeing, hitting seven.
Two of the 11 customers of Hana Tour were shot, Tarkong said.
Jae Hyung Park sustained gunshot wounds in the upper torso. He was evacuated to Guam and flown to Korea last Saturday. He is possibly paralyzed from the waist down, according to DPS.
Man Soo Kim was shot in the right arm. He returned to Korea with the rest of his tour group last Sunday.
Three of the four customers of Costa Tour were injured, Tarkong said.
Jung Sik Kim, 38, male, sustained a gunshot wound in the right thigh and right lower buttocks. His wife, Soo Kyung Lee, was not injured.
Joon Hyung Kim, 8, was shot in the right arm, while Seo Yoon Kim, 4, had minor abrasions on the left cheek. Both are children of Jung Kim and Soo Lee.
Tarkong said he has no information about the other injured victims in the Last Command Post shooting.
Suicide
Li then drove the van to Banzai Cliff where he parked at the cliff line, Tarkong said. Li shot two more rounds using a .223 rifle at a group of tourists who were at the Banzai Cliff Monument. No one was hit.
Li tried to destroy his personal identification cards and documents by setting them on fire on the passenger seat of the van.
Li then pointed the .223 rifle under his chin and shot himself. Responding police officers found Li's body near the cliff line. The gunman left several notes at the shooting range.
“The contents of the notes will not be released,” Tarkong said.
Police also recovered from the van over 750 rounds of ammunition for a .223 caliber rifle, .410 shotgun, and .22 Magnum.
The gunman had also been identified as Zhong Ren Li and Zhongren Li in other publications but the Saipan Tribune chose to identify him based on the CNMI Department of Labor's records and the Chinese manner of using the surname ahead of the first name, in this case, Li Zhong Ren.
