Saipan girl wins Jonas Brothers’ autographed guitar

Christmas is much sweeter for 12-year-old Nicole Johanna Arenovski, who won an autographed Epiphone Les Paul guitar from the Jonas Brothers, one of today’s most popular American pop rock boy bands and an active supporter of diabetes awareness programs in the nation.

“It’s a surprise. This is so cool,” said Arenovski, as she held the collector’s item guitar, which came as a Christmas gift yesterday through the Hard Rock Café Sacramento and the California Diabetes Association.

Arenovski received her autographed guitar from Hard Rock Café Saipan operations manager Raynaldo Perez during a surprise ceremony for her at the Hard Rock Café in Garapan yesterday afternoon.

Her father, Saipan Chamber of Commerce president Jim Arenovski, said his sister, Andrea Arenovski Shephard, bought raffle tickets and bought items from the “Lines, Vines & Trying Times” menu at the Hard Rock Café in Sacramento in the summer.

Shephard wrote Nicole Johanna Arenovski’s name on the ticket, which won the raffle drawing among thousands of ticket buyers.

The raffle drawing was part of the Jonas Brothers’ support of diabetes awareness programs. One of the brothers, Nick Jonas, was diagnosed in November 2005 with Type 1 Diabetes and has since been using his celebrity status to raise awareness on the need for research to find a cure for the disease.

“I didn’t expect to win,” Nicole, a seventh grader at Whispering Palms School, said after receiving the guitar.

Jim Arenovski said his daughter could not go to California so the guitar was instead shipped to Hard Rock Café Saipan, for yesterday’s presentation, which came as a surprise for Nicole.

The Arenovskis had a lunch at Hard Rock Café yesterday, and the father invited some of Nicole’s friends to witness the presentation.

Jim Arenovski said the raffle drawing for a cause is a nice way to remind everyone how dangerous diabetes is. The CNMI has a high rate of diabetes.

The Jonas Brothers gained popularity from the Disney Channel children’s television network. From Wyckoff, New Jersey, the band consists of three brothers: Paul Kevin Jonas II (Kevin Jonas), Joseph Adam Jonas (Joe Jonas), and Nicholas Jerry Jonas (Nick Jonas).

In the summer of 2008, they starred in the Disney Channel original movie Camp Rock. The band has released four albums: It’s About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, and Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

In 2008, the group was nominated for the Best New Artist award at the 51st Grammy Awards and won the award for Breakthrough Artist at the American Music Awards. As of May 2009, before the release of Lines, Vines and Trying Times, they have sold over 8 million albums worldwide, according to Wikipedia.
