US govt agrees to delay sentencing of mariner

The U.S. government has agreed to delay the sentencing of a man who altered his expired U.S. Merchant Marine Officer's license since he is currently at sea.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Beverly R. McCallum has agreed with Loren A. Sutton, lawyer for Drayton Crestwell Reeves, to ask the federal court to move the sentencing to May 13, 2010.

Reeves' sentencing is currently set for April 22, 2010, in the U.S. District Court for the NMI.

The parties said that Reeves is currently at sea as a mariner. As a result, the U.S. Probation's pre-sentence interview wth him has not yet taken place.

Reeves is expected back on Saipan on March 20, 2010.

The parties said the U.S. Probation Officer wants more time to submit the pre-sentence investigation report.

The continuance would allow the probation officer enough time to review Reeves and submit the report in advance of sentencing.

The U.S. government charged Reeves with misuse of a federal license and false statement for altering his expired U.S. Merchant Marine Officer's license to create an impression he was still a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed master.

Reeves signed a plea agreement with the U.S. government. Last January, he pleaded guilty to misuse of a federal license. The court accepted Reeves' guilty plea and temporarily freed him on some conditions.

McCallum stated that Reeves committed false statement on July 28, 2009 when during an interview with the USCG on Saipan, he told USCG Lt. Junior Grade Derricka Fortson that he had a valid merchant marine officer license. Reeves claimed he was not in possession of this license because he had submitted it to the USCG National Maritime Center for renewal, McCallum said.
