Rain, rain, go away, let the SML guys play
Three months of Saipan Major League baseball have come down to a first round showdown between the Miller Lite Brewers and the Pirates tonight at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field at 6:30pm. All that is needed now is a little cooperation from Mother Nature to get the teams in the swing of things once again.
Wednesday night’s SML baseball playoff match was again postponed due to poor field conditions caused by the heavy rains that have been plaguing the island for the last week according to Brewers’ manager Tony Rogolifoi.
Standing water, soggy grass and a muddy diamond made for conditions that were unplayable for the island’s top level of competitive hard ballers.
The good news is that Thursday was relatively rain free, allowing the field to dry up a bit. With any luck the first round of the playoffs will be a go for the scheduled 6:30pm start on tonight at Palacios field.
The second place Brewers (8-4) will take on the third place Pirates (6-6) in a best of three showdown to determine who will challenge the defending champion Northern Yankees for the SML Championship.
The Brewers and Pirates have played each other four times this year to a 2-2 draw, including the exciting contest last week during the make-up game in which the Pirates edged their rivals by a 7-5 score.
When the games finally do get underway, all of the play-by-play action will be broadcast live, in their entirety on local radio station KRSI FM 97.9 The Rock.
Players have taken advantage of the time off to rest up their arms, managers have had more time to scrutinize their game plans, and fans have had plenty of time to practice their cheers before tonight’s Game 1. Game 2 is set to be played Monday night, June 21, and a third game will be played Wednesday, June 23, if necessary. All games are set for 6:30pm starts at the Palacios field.
