{"id":100017,"date":"2006-04-22T03:35:00","date_gmt":"2006-04-22T03:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a6e1ba7b-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2006-04-22T03:35:00","modified_gmt":"2006-04-22T03:35:00","slug":"a6e1ba8e-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a6e1ba8e-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Red flag raised on 3 beaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag on three beach sites on Saipan after samples collected showed excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria. <\/p>\n<p>The affected sites are the Wing Beach, the South Puerto Rico Dump, and the Garapan Beach Drainage.<\/p>\n<p>DEQ said that beach water samples from these locations contained concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria\u2014fecal coliform and enterococci\u2014that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water. Therefore, in order to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given the following locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified,\u201d the division said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p> DEQ analyzes water samples collected from 38 locations on Saipan\u2019s east, west and south recreational beaches and storm drainages every Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>The division welcomes all inquiries as to the quality of the beach water. The public is encouraged to contact DEQ at 664-8500 with any questions.
