{"id":100112,"date":"2006-04-25T04:59:00","date_gmt":"2006-04-25T04:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a6f6384d-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2006-04-25T04:59:00","modified_gmt":"2006-04-25T04:59:00","slug":"a6f63863-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a6f63863-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Scuba divers to spearhead lagoon cleanup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time, it\u2019s the scuba divers turn to do some cleaning up of the CNMI lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>Reina Camacho, Division of Environmental Quality\u2019s public information officer, said that the scuba dive cleanup would be held on Saturday, May 6, beginning 8:30am at the Sugar Dock in Susupe.<\/p>\n<p>Camacho said there would be a second dive cleanup at Laulau Bay around 10am on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>The Sugar Dock and Laulau beaches are popular spots for picnics or diving, said DEQ marine biologist Peter Houk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to dive around the Sugar Dock area for a shallow dive and pick up all trash in the water,\u201d said Houk, who will be also be the cleanup coordinator on May 6. <\/p>\n<p>He expressed hope that the joint dive would result in cleaner waters around the island.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope the joint dive between as many dive operators as possible and government marine monitoring agencies will lead to a good discussion about our coral reefs and how we can all help protect them,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n<p>After the dive at Laulau, Houk said there would be a few refreshments and snacks for a &#8216;hang out&#8217; session among the scuba divers.<\/p>\n<p>The cleanup, one of the activities organized as part of DEQ\u2019s Environmental Awareness celebration, hopes to attract as many scuba divers as possible.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDEQ will provide air tanks, if needed; however all other dive gear must be provided by the participants.
