With less than two months to go before Saipan becomes the regional sporting capital during the 6th Micronesian Games, some hometown athletes got a little boost to their training as the CNMI Women\u2019s Fast-Pitch Softball Team received their uniforms and wore them for the first time during their Tuesday evening practice at Miguel \u201cTan Ge\u201d Basa Softball Field.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the folks at Pacific Trading Co., the diamond gals were looking good in their new threads, and the timing couldn\u2019t have been better as the donation comes on the heels of the team receiving news that their efforts spent while preparing for slow-pitch would have to be stepped up for the high-speed game.<\/p>\n
The nearly last-minute switch required the pitchers to make a swift departure from arcs of \u201cmountain ball\u201d in favor of the underhanded laser beams. The catchers also had to make the adjustment to wearing the full gear behind the plate for their safety. Despite the changes, head coach Joe Guerrero said that things are looking up for the all-stars. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe got the equipment from Many Sablan, who is also helping the team, and everybody is improving. That\u2019s good news,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Guerrero said that it wasn\u2019t easy at the beginning but that his dedicated squad of sluggers has done a great job adjusting from slow pitch to fast pitch.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we first started [the mood] was kind of down, but now everybody\u2019s improving with batting and fielding. We won\u2019t have any problems with our fielding, and everybody\u2019s doing a lit better with the hitting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The women were in high spirits last night as they worked the infield combos, perfected their pitching, and stretched their legs with conditioning drills in the outfield, and coach Guerrero said that his team will not let the late start on the fast game hold them down this summer.<\/p>\n
