Seven students representing different high schools in the Commonwealth will be competing on May 5, 2006, in the 23rd Annual Attorney General\u2019s Cup Speech Competition.<\/p>\n
This year the speech competition is being held for the first time on Rota, at the new Rota Judicial Center.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s competitors are Katherene Rose T. Taylor from Calvary Christian Academy, Nicole Torres from Grace Christian Academy, Keala Mikala Boyer Peters from Kagman High School, Racheal Reyes from Marianas High School, James Ryan Benavente from Mt. Carmel High School, Ray Anthony B. Duenas from Saipan Southern High School, and Julvana Maratita from Rota High School.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General\u2019s Cup Competition provides high school students the opportunity to research a topical legal issue, form positions about the issue, and present arguments for their positions to a panel of judges drawn from the community. Each high school may select one student to compete. The A.G. Cup winner will have his or her name engraved on a plaque mounted on the base of the cup itself, which will be displayed at the winning student\u2019s school for the coming year.<\/p>\n
This year, students are asked to formulate immigration policy for the CNMI. Students will describe their vision of the CNMI\u2019s immigration policy, including answering the question of who is a foreigner and who is local, then describing the circumstances under which immigrants\u2014including refugees\u2014should be allowed to relocate to the CNMI, and answering the question of what duties are owed to immigrants in the CNMI.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a terrific opportunity for students to think hard about very tough, very important issues we have to grapple with here in the Commonwealth,\u201d said Attorney General Matthew T. Gregory. \u201cWe are proud to provide our future leaders with a forum for them to share their ideas about these issues. And we are especially proud to be holding this year\u2019s competition on Rota.\u201d<\/p>\n
