{"id":100215,"date":"2006-04-28T06:37:00","date_gmt":"2006-04-28T06:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a701e82c-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2006-04-28T06:37:00","modified_gmt":"2006-04-28T06:37:00","slug":"a701e83f-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a701e83f-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"DPS help sought to curb tourism-related offenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alarmed by negative reports about tourists\u2019 safety in the Northern Marianas, Marianas Visitors Authority officials have requested the police department for assistance leading to greater protection of visitors.<\/p>\n<p>These came in view of unpleasant tourism feedback, including the \u201coverly aggressive solicitation\u201d by female entertainers in Garapan, throwing of stones at passing cars in Tanapag\/San Roque area, stealing of tourists\u2019 items, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Two separate incidents also took place recently on Tinian:  a Japanese couple being hit with a metal object and robbed by a man while at Blow Hole as well as the vandalism of the Okinawan monument.<\/p>\n<p>The Okinawan tower was built by the Micronesia Repatriation Association in honor of the war dead from Okinawa.<\/p>\n<p>Graffiti was all over the tower, and its descriptive sign and flower stand was reportedly damaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s just work together. We need your help,\u201d said MVA vice chair Marian Aldan-Pierce in a recent meeting with Department of Public Safety commissioner Ernest Williams.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, the need to revive the DPS bike patrol was cited.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Williams said that his office would extend assistance to MVA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be here to assist you.
