The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter shrugged off the proposed changes to its Congressional Charter, saying this will have no effect on how Red Cross charter offices operate in their respective jurisdictions.<\/p>\n
ARC-NMI Chapter director John Hirsh said the changes that are expected to be introduced in the U.S. Congress this week would only affect the Red Cross \u201cinternally but not externally.\u201d <\/p>\n
He added that satellite offices around the world such as the CNMI would still provide the same services it has been extending to the community through the years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to make us better,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
Hirsh said the Red Cross head office has actually 50 members under its Board of Governance. The proposed charter will trim the leadership to 10 to 12 members only. He said the Red Cross here would retain the number of its board members.<\/p>\n
According to an American Red Cross statement yesterday, the headquarters fully supports the legislation to amend the American Red Cross Congressional Charter. This legislation achieves all of the recommendations put forth by the Red Cross Board\u2019s Governance Committee and its Independent Governance Audit Panel over the past year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Red Cross views this legislation as vital to modernizing its governance structure to meet the demands of the 21st century\u2014and is hopeful that Congress will pass this historic legislation before it adjourns for the year,\u201d said the group.<\/p>\n
Red Cross acknowledged all members of Congress, especially Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who are helping implement these substantive changes in Red Cross\u2019 governance.<\/p>\n
The Red Cross earlier asked for Grassley\u2019s assistance to ensure swift passage of these proposed changes through amendments to its Congressional Charter.
