{"id":123860,"date":"2008-06-21T20:39:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-21T20:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b08bdd5c-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2008-06-21T20:39:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-21T20:39:00","slug":"b08bdd6f-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/b08bdd6f-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Power Plant 4 saves island\u2019s power services\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The privately operated Power Plant 4 in Puerto Rico has been saving Saipan\u2019s electric power distribution in the middle of malfunctions and current repair on power engines at the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.\u2019s main power plants.<\/p>\n<p>CUC executive director Antonio Muna said the Pacific Marine and Industrial Corp.-operated Power Plant 4 is a key component in CUC\u2019s power system, delivering over 30 percent of the island\u2019s power needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout Power Plant 4 stepping up to the plate, I think our situation would be probably graver as a result,\u201d Muna said.<\/p>\n<p>The executive director said that Power Plant 4\u2019s design megawatts is 20, but it has been providing 14.4 megawatts with nine of its 10 power engines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s really what we need at this point,\u201d said Muna, explaining that the island\u2019s peak load is 41 megawatts, but the power being produced is only 38.2, resulting in a power deficit of 2.8 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 11, CUC\u2019s Power Plant 1, which has a design megawatt of 81.2, produced only 22 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p>Power Plant 2, which has a design megawatt of 15, only delivered 1.8 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPower Plant 4 has been very reliable. They are doing much better,\u201d Muna said.<\/p>\n<p>During Tuesday\u2019s public forum at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe, over 200 people showed up and vented their frustrations with CUC and strongly called for its privatization.
