Bennett, former CNMI Board of Education teacher representative, and Rita Sablan, PPS associate commissioner for instruction, interviewed for the position of commissioner, a position left vacant after BOE in June asked PSS Commissioner Dr. David Borja to step down.<\/p>\n<p>Applicant Debra Ellen withdrew her name before the interview process. <\/p>\n<p>During a series of questions, Bennett said PSS must find ways to overcome funding obstacles. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor quite some time, the CNMI has been suffering from a lack of resources,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Bennett said he created an economics workbook for junior high school students, and would like to see more teachers create materials. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not talking textbooks, but supplemental resources,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The materials could be shared between schools, he added. <\/p>\n<p>Sablan said PSS must look outside of schools for resources in order to provide support for curriculum assessment. <\/p>\n<p>During various questions, Bennett referred to a lack of funding. \u201cI think this is an underlying thread that keeps coming up,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Bennett said the district must pursue flexibility with funding. \u201cOur situation is unlike on the mainland, therefore we do have to be creative,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>PSS must understand what it is getting into when the district applies for various funds, Sablan said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to tie our hands,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The board is meeting this weekend to deliberate and will hopefully name a candidate by the start of the school year next month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The two candidates for the Public Schools System commissioner position told the Board of Education Wednesday the CNMI school district must work hard to overcome a lack of resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-125065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/125065","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=125065"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/125065\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=125065"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=125065"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=125065"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
