A crew from the visiting USS Stethem has just completed community work by repainting the outer walls of the Library Building at the Marianas High School in Susupe.<\/p>\n
MHS school council president Tony Benavente said they are fortunate that the crew were able to give their time and do such work in the campus.<\/p>\n
He said the Council, in coordination with the Military and Veterans Affairs Office, arranged this activity, which he said was similar to what the crew of another visiting U.S. ship did last year.<\/p>\n
That crew made picnic tables but the school still needs more tables for students to enjoy.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir work was really well appreciated. On behalf of the Council, we express our profound gratitude,\u201d said Benavente. <\/p>\n
The Navy men, who were led by the ship\u2019s Commanding Officer, Shan Byrne, also did cleanup work on campus grounds.<\/p>\n
\u2018We enjoy this kind of community relation activities,\u201d said Byrne after joining several of his men in a photo session at the Dolphins\u2019 monument along with Benavente, Governor\u2019s Office Special Assistant Ruth Coleman of the Military and Veterans Affairs Office and MHS principal Karen Borja.<\/p>\n
Byrne said they are on the island for rest-and-recreation purposes but they also interact with members of the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re also enjoying the beautiful scenery,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n
Some of the 276 crew members went diving or played golf.<\/p>\n
The crew will complete their five-day sojourn today as they cruise back to their homeport in Yokosuka, Japan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
