The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is expanding the daily rotating power outages from two hours to three hours this week due to ongoing mechanical repairs on engines 2 and 8 at Power Plant 1. <\/p>\n
The three-hour outages will be rotated across the entire island, with each section experiencing three outages in a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n
CUC officials had hoped to repair engine 8 by yesterday, but are now anticipating it will not be operational until Sunday, according to a statement issued yesterday. <\/p>\n
With engines 2 and 6 operating at Power Plant 1, and nine of the engines at Power Plant 4 working, CUC is producing approximately 24 megawatts of power. <\/p>\n
Earlier this week CUC was down to producing less than 20 megawatts of power when only one engine was working at Power Plant 1. <\/p>\n
In order for CUC to follow the two-hour load shedding schedule, at least three engines must be operational, Gary Camacho, acting Power Division manager, said on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
The Aggreko generators, which should be operational by mid-September, will allow for 15 to 18 additional megawatts, said CUC executive director Antonio Muna. <\/p>\n
