{"id":125860,"date":"2008-09-02T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-02T21:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b145b3be-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2008-09-02T21:50:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-02T21:50:00","slug":"b145b3cf-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/b145b3cf-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"PSS gets $600K more for food programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture is increasing the amount of grant money the Public School System will receive for their nutrition programs this year. <\/p>\n<p>PSS will receive an additional $600,000 to cover the higher costs of living, for a total of approximately $7.7 million, said Federal Programs advisor Tim Thornburgh. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really, really need that,\u201d he said of the increase. <\/p>\n<p>Rice alone has doubled, he added, and \u201cthe cost of milk is way up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PSS will use the grant to increase the amount of money food vendors are paid for each meal, Thornburgh said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re confident it\u2019ll be enough,\u201d he said. \u201cIt should be sufficient based on the current day costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vendors on Saipan will now be paid $2.85 per lunch, a 10-cent increase from last year.
