Senen Pangilinan overcame a strong 16-player field to win the 4th Annual Marianas Turkey Shoot 8-Ball Tournament at USS Peleliu Club last Wednesday.<\/p>\n
For his efforts, he took home $120 and a turkey with his first-place trophy. Second and third place trophies went to Jerry Soriano and Joey Lucido. Soriano earned a turkey and $75, while Lucido got $45 and a bucket of giveaways.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith so many good players the difference between first and last place is a couple of mistakes,\u201d said USSP\u2019s Ken Phillips. \u201cFor some reason, everyone except Senen was making mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pangilinan marched to the finals by sending Nolan Cultura, Primo Rivera, Ron Chisato, and Lucido to the losers\u2019 bracket. Rivera had beaten Dean Santos, while Chisato topped John Mongami and Taylor Watanabe. Watanabe had notched a win against Franz De Luna.<\/p>\n
Juancho Mendoza ran the table against Roger Espiritu, the only sure way to beat the defending champ. He then fell to two-time champion Soriano, who had just defeated R.E. Rengiil.<\/p>\n
Lucido reached the winners\u2019 final by winning against Rico Montano, Erwin Gomez, and Soriano.<\/p>\n
Espiritu eliminated Rengiil in a repeat of last year\u2019s championship, but fell to Rivera. His victory string stopped at one, as Chester Hamoy came back from a first-round loss to Gomez by climbing past Montano, Watanabe, Rivera, and Chisato.<\/p>\n
Santos topped Cultura, but was eliminated by Mendoza. Mongami also had a short comeback, beating De Luna before falling to Gomez, who also shot down Mendoza before losing to Soriano.<\/p>\n
Soriano then stopped Hamoy\u2019s streak at four and moved past Lucido to play in the championship. He started strong against Pangilinan, but an errant bank shot dropped the 8-ball early and handed first place away.<\/p>\n
The trophies were provided by Pacific Amusement, while MARPAC provided Bud family giveaways.<\/p>\n
USSP also holds regular 8-ball tournaments on Mondays starting at 8pm. The entrance fee is $5 for the double-elimination contests.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been some interest in starting 9-ball tournaments again and in having a government league,\u201d said Phillips. \u201cCall or come by if you\u2019re interested.\u201d<\/p>\n
