{"id":128534,"date":"2008-12-02T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-02T22:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b291979a-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2008-12-02T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-02T22:40:00","slug":"b29197b0-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/b29197b0-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinian Santa may cancel gift-giving this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the kindhearted lady who has been playing the role of Santa Claus among children on Tinian for the past two Christmases?<\/p>\n<p>Ma\u00efa, who prefers to be called by her lowercased first name, said yesterday that she might cancel the third annual Christmas giveaway that was originally scheduled to be held at the maia\u2019s Books &#038; Donation Center from Dec. 15-22.<\/p>\n<p>Ma\u00efa founded the Center and runs the program at her home by herself.<\/p>\n<p>Now 70 years old, ma\u00efa said that, without help, she is unable to handle the many needy families who should be receiving the vouchers for the free children\u2019s gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, she said, she is reluctantly considering canceling the event.<\/p>\n<p>If she does cancel the event, she will still be faced with the problem of what to do with the 200 Christmas gifts that she has already obtained from generous donors abroad and from local people who have donated.<\/p>\n<p>The Division of Youth Services used to help ma\u00efa with the distribution of the vouchers in previous years but hasn\u2019t done so this year due to the absence of Director Lillian Cepeda, who is on leave.<\/p>\n<p>Ma\u00efa said the current division head has not been able to provide her \u201cwith needed information on the number of children to be \u2018gifted\u2019 and seems incapable of handling the priority rating of the vouchers, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saipan Tribune called the DYS office several times yesterday afternoon but no one answered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>For the past three years, ma\u00efa has been providing free books, clothes, shoes, and all kinds of other necessities to those in need, but she said her many attempts to obtain recognition and support from the local administration for the Center and her other projects, such as a shelter for abused women and an international peace center, \u201chave been ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also said that, although the Center is right outside the back door of the Tinian Mayor\u2019s Office, \u201cwhere all of his employees park their cars for over a year,\u201d the current mayor has never visited the Center\u2014despite many invitation\u2014\u201cto see how his constituents are helping each other with donations of things they don\u2019t use, that [ma\u00efa] makes available to anyone who need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All these, ma\u00efa says, contributes to her contemplating canceling the Christmas gift event and perhaps even closing down the Donation Center altogether. <\/p>\n<p>Tinian Mayor Jose San Nicolas was unavailable for comment as of press time.
