Both were honored during an awards presentation held at the VFW Post No. 3457 Canteen on Dec. 22, 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The Voice of Democracy is the VFW\u2019s premier scholarship program where students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This contest is open to students in grade nine through 12. The Patriot\u2019s Pen contest, on the other hand, gives student an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. This is open to students in grades six through eight.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Palijo, the other winners in the Voice of Democracy competition were Jermaine Peres, also from Calvary Christian, second place; and Nacita Aldan from Marianas High School, third place.<\/p>\n<p>The other winners in the Patriot\u2019s Pen contest were Ian Rogolifoi from Mount Carmel, second place; and Daphne Dela Cruz from Hopwood Junior High, third place.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, each year the VFW recognizes teachers from all grade level who promotes civic responsibility and patriotism in the classroom. This year\u2019s winner is John H. Davis Jr. from Marianas High School.<\/p>\n<p>The winning students and teacher each received a Veterans of Foreign Wars certificate of achievement and cash awards.
