While most residents are sleeping, events taking place thousands of miles away in Washington D.C. will have a profound impact on the CNMI\u2019s future. <\/p>\n<p>Not only is President Bush poised to designate the Marianas Trench monument, Gregorio \u201cKilili\u201d Sablan is set to be sworn in as the CNMI\u2019s first-ever delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. <\/p>\n<p>He will join other new members as they are sworn in, and the 111th Congress convenes for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, outgoing CNMI Resident Rep. Pete A. Tenorio and Sablan\u2019s family are some of the many people that are planned to be on hand to witness the event. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to be representing the people of the Northern Marianas on this historic day,\u201d Sablan said in a statement. \u201cAnd I am particularly thankful that so many of the CNMI\u2019s leaders have chosen to recognize the importance of this day by traveling to Washington to be present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday Sablan opened his office in Washington D.C. and named his initial staff members. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks a historical day for many reasons in the CNMI.
