The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges is expected to decide on the accreditation status of the Northern Marianas College by the end of this month.<\/p>\n
Board of Regents chair Charles Cepeda and NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez had just returned from San Francisco, California, where they met the members of the commission.<\/p>\n
Fernandez clarified yesterday that, while the decision is still to be made, NMC\u2019s accreditation with ACCJC-WASC was not taken out during the show-cause period.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough we won\u2019t know the commission\u2019s decision until later this month, I want to stress that NMC remains fully accredited during the show-cause period.\u201d<\/p>\n
NMC said this is contrary to what some in the community believe. NMC said it has been receiving some inquiries about it.<\/p>\n
She stressed that all academic credits and degrees from NMC will remain accredited and will be transferable to other accredited institutions.<\/p>\n
During their meeting with the commission, Fernandez informed the body about NMC\u2019s ongoing professional development trainings. <\/p>\n
She also discussed the newly published institutional guide and the results of the strategic plan that would be submitted and reviewed by the Planning, Program Review and Assessment Outcomes Committee.<\/p>\n
Fernandez also reported to the commission some of NMC\u2019s ongoing activities that include assessment of the first cycle of program review, faculty assembly, employee training, and all course-level student learning outcomes.<\/p>\n
Other highlights of Fernandez\u2019s report to the commission were:<\/p>\n
Hiring of a highly qualified chief financial and administrative officer and other key staff, <\/p>\n
All academic department chairs will be attending the WASC Student Learning and Assessment Level I training; and <\/p>\n
NMC will continue to invest in training and development to build capacity at all levels of the college.<\/p>\n
