Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation\u2019s second Leapfrog training exercise, a modified bike-and-run racing event, is set this Saturday, March 21, at Paupau Beach.<\/p>\n
Registration will start at 6:30am and the race will start at 7am, according to coordinator Joshua Berger. <\/p>\n
Berger estimates that participants will take about 60-80 minutes to finish the course.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor those of you who missed the first Leapfrog last September, you need two people, one bike, and two pair of running shoes. You share the bike. One of you runs while the other bikes, and then you switch. This time there will be no pre-arranged drop points for the bike\u2014it is up to you to develop your own strategy,\u201d said Berger.<\/p>\n
There will be no swim in this event. <\/p>\n
Competitors can share either a mountain or road bike for the tiring seven-mile distance from the Paupau Beach to Banzai Cliff Memorial Park and back.<\/p>\n
The race will be free for any member of the NMITF, while non-members will be charged $5.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will provide the organization, traffic control and drinks. No prizes nor timing. This is a training exercise for the upcoming XTERRA Saipan and Tagaman,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n
NMITF is looking for a couple of volunteers, especially someone to do traffic control at the intersection of the road coming out from the Paupau Beach.<\/p>\n
The tandem of Butch Sublemente and Ronald Villafria won the first Leapfrog race, which was a longer distance of 8.5 miles. They clocked in at 47.23 and 47.56, respectively. <\/p>\n
The event was called Leapfrog because it was a two-person team using one bicycle, each alternating the bike and run leg portion of the race. Everyone starts the race at the same time.<\/p>\n
From the starting point, one teammate rides ahead and leaves the bike at a designated exchange point and begins running.<\/p>\n
One runs to the bike and then rides past or leapfrogs his or her partner and drops the bike at the next exchange point.<\/p>\n
The process was repeated and the team that completed the course, in this case Sublemente and Villafria, won the race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
