{"id":133312,"date":"2009-05-27T21:26:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-27T21:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b43d0607-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2009-05-27T21:26:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-27T21:26:00","slug":"b43d061b-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/b43d061b-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Rules of Chamorro writing up for review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a general assumption among parents that if their children are taught English at home, they will do better in school, but the head of the Chamorro-Carolinian Language Policy Commission says this is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Omar said this misguided notion is the main cause of the massive decline in the number of children speaking the local dialects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that parents should make the right adjustment,\u201d Omar said.<\/p>\n<p>He said there is still hope for local dialects\u2014Chamorro and Carolinian\u2014to flourish just like in the old days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are still some parents who maintain that they will teach their children the local language at home then let them learn English in school,\u201d said Omar.<\/p>\n<p>As pat of efforts to reverse this declining trend, the CCLP will be holding a five-day seminar\/workshop to review the rules of the Chammorro Orthography or the writing system of the local language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to see whether it is still applicable or it needs to be changed,\u201d said Omar.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop has been set for July 7-11 but CCLPC is still making arrangements with some hotels for the venue.<\/p>\n<p>CCLPC is currently preparing a grant assistance proposal from the Humanities Council for this project.<\/p>\n<p>The project is in collaboration with Dr. Rita Inos, Dr. Liz Rechebei and Dr. Sandra Chang.<\/p>\n<p>Invited participants will be the staff of CCLPC and members of the committee that is currently reviewing the Chamorro Dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>Inos, Rechebei and Chang are coordinating that dictionary review committee.<\/p>\n<p>It would be the first time that a review of the rules is made.<\/p>\n<p>The Chammorro Orthography was established in 1973. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a general assumption among parents that if their children are taught English at home, they will do better in school, but the head of the Chamorro-Carolinian Language Policy Commission says this is wrong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-133312","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/133312","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=133312"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/133312\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=133312"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=133312"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=133312"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
