I don’t reside on the island anymore so I cannot weigh in on that debate but I can relate something Rex Sorensen said to me many years back when I was working as a DJ at the old Hot98 station and he acquired Hot98 to become part of his larger media group and Power99. I asked him for a raise and his response was quick: “We are a sales organization first and foremost, not a radio programming and content creator. We sell airtime and only our sales staff can expect that kind of money.”

Hearing that certainly did take the piss out of me for wanting to give 110 percent of my creative efforts to his sales organization that just so happens to sell a radio product, but it’s business and I understand where he was coming from. In the end he has built a sizable media group in the Pacific, and that is no easy task.

Rex Sorensen at the end of the day is an accountant, end of story. He sees his business in broadcasting from that perspective first, and not as a producer, director, or a journalist would. Clearly, he’s in business to make a buck, and in these economic times it’s hard. With ad revenues falling across all media platforms, something has to give and get cut.

Is delaying the important news and sports a wise choice to hit your customers with when cutting costs? Probably not. But remember he runs a sales organization that just so happens to sell airtime, not a production company, so go figure from that point of view. Like it or not we all truly see the world through different colored glasses.

Shane Novak
via email

[7

post-1458","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-letters-to-the-editor
["GET
