David<br \/>\nReporter<\/div>\n<p>The Commonwealth Development Authority has already started reviewing applications submitted for the position of comptroller.<\/p>\n<p>Executive director Manuel A. Sablan, during the CDA board meeting on Wednesday, said that current comptroller Stuart B. Smith has \u201cdecided to end his employment with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith&#8217;s contract expires on the first week of December.<\/p>\n<p>CDA, an autonomous agency created to stimulate economic development in the CNMI, advertised Smith&#8217;s position from August to September.<\/p>\n<p>The advertisement said that the comptroller position \u201cis an excepted service position.\u201d Salary range for the position is $50,000 to $65,000 for a renewable term every two years.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, staff and board members discussed what would be an acceptable period of transition for Smith to endorse his work to the new comptroller.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Marcie Tomokane argued that a basic orientation would last \u201cmaybe a week or two but not a full-blown 30 days\u201d to avoid paying for two comptrollers.<\/p>\n<p>Sablan emphasized that his concern is \u201cto make sure that whoever gets in, that he can really run with it because Stuart has done a number of things in the agency\u201d such as setting up accounting records and some of the programs that CDA has, including the new State Small Business Credit Initiative or SSBCI Loan Guaranty and Loan Participation Programs.<\/p>\n<p>Interview for the applicants started on Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Clarissa V.
