The NMC Marianas Reunification Survey Group, composed of Current Issues class students from the Northern Marianas College, is inviting the communities of Saipan, Rota, and Tinian to participate in a public opinion survey regarding the reunification of the CNMI and Guam. The dates and venues of the survey will be announced soon.<\/p>\n
The survey is being conducted to complement House Bill 17-181, introduced by Rep. Joseph Palacios (R-Saipan), which would push for the inclusion of the question \u201cShould the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, reunify in pursuit of a new political status?\u201d on the general election ballot.<\/p>\n
Results collected from the survey will be turned over to Palacios and his committee to assist in their deliberations. The survey will be non-binding, however, which means that its results will not have any bearing on any prospective law or policy. <\/p>\n
\u201cDiscussions about reunification between the CNMI and Guam have been circulating for the past 60 years,\u201d said Current Issues instructor Sam McPhetres. \u201cA similar movement to discuss reunification is starting in Guam.\u201d <\/p>\n
McPhetres added, \u201cThis survey will help people contemplate the pros and cons of reunification and help our team paint a clear picture of what direction the CNMI population wants to pursue.\u201d<\/p>\n
