Members of the Kotohira-Gu Shrine in Japan made their annual pilgrimage to Rota last week to conduct a memorial service in honor of those who lost their lives on the island during World War II.<\/p>\n
Members of the shrine have been conducting services on the island for more than 20 years. Last June 8\u2019s event at Sabana Peace Memorial was coordinated by Rota\u2019s Japanese Club, led by long-time Rota resident Akio Furukawa.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe annual Kotohira-Gu ceremony is a long-standing and familiar event in our community,\u201d said Sandra Atalig, acting Roads and Grounds Maintenance manager of the Marianas Visitors Authority office on Rota. \u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to again welcome the group this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Members of the Rota community also attended the event, including Rota Mayor Melchor<\/p>\n
Mendiola, members of the 13th Rota Municipal Council, staff of the Marianas Visitors Authority, and tour operators.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Kotohira-Gu members donated a $500 gift certificate for fuel to the MVA to be use toward the grounds maintenance of the peach memorial and the Palii and Aponon Japanese tombs. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
