Bordallo issued yesterday the following statement following President Barack Obama\u2019s address outlining his plan to reduce U.S. forces in Afghanistan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur nation\u2019s effort to combat terrorism in the Afghan region has been a long and costly mission,\u201d said Bordallo. \u201cSeveral of our island\u2019s sons and daughters have sacrificed much, and we must always remember those who paid the ultimate price in defense of our freedom. \u00a0There is a strong sentiment in Congress that it is time to begin a transition for the Afghan people to take control of their country\u2019s security. \u00a0While there remain questions on the pace of the drawdown, I believe the President has made a solid proposal, and we will examine all the details when they become available. \u00a0The President\u2019s plan gives enough flexibility to adjust the schedule of the drawdown should conditions on the ground warrant it next summer. \u00a0Otherwise it is time for our nation to signal the Afghan people that there will not be an indefinite deployment of American troops in their country. \u00a0As the President mentioned, the primary purpose of defeating Al Qaeda has essentially been accomplished, and it is now up to Afghanistan to ensure its own security.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guam Delegate Madeleine Z.
