To Mr. Keiper: It\u2019s probably pretty obvious to anyone who\u2019s been following our correspondence back and forth over the past month that you and I have gotten off to a bad start, and I do apologize for my part in allowing this situation to develop, but I think I\u2019ve found some common ground we can start building a bridge on.<\/p>\n
Our islands have been burdened with a \u201cfestering\u201d immigration problem that\u2019s been going on for over a year now, and no one seems to have a clue as to how to remedy this. Before federalization came in and took over local immigration and labor, these two departments were a major source of revenue for our islands, and the programs and procedures in place were working to everyone\u2019s benefit. Now, one year later, there\u2019s thousands of out-of-work, displaced immigrants just hanging around our islands waiting for what?<\/p>\n
In the same paper your letter to the editor came out in there was a cartoon by political satirist \u201cBranch\u201d portraying Sen. John Mc Cain blaming the immigrants for \u201ctaking jobs away from American arsonists.\u201d That was a pretty good cartoon, but I realize it\u2019s just a reflection of a far more serious immigration problem that\u2019s been in the news for the past year also.<\/p>\n
It appears as if we have a similar situation where our local governments have a problem that\u2019s been taken out of our hands, and the people who are going to make the final decision on this may not have our best interests in mind. Am I correct on that?<\/p>\n
Anyway, I think our readers will be as interested as I am in hearing about how your immigration problems are affecting the people of your state, and what the eventual outcome will be. I will certainly be looking forward to your response.<\/p>\n
