WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Guam Police Department $1,278,072 in federal financial assistance. The grant was awarded through the Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program and will provide funding for three years to enable GPD to recruit and retain 12 law enforcement officers.<\/p>\n
The COPS Hiring Program provides funding to state and local law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve, and\/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs and increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. \u00a0This grant will cover the full salary and benefits packages for highly trained public sector positions. \u00a0The jobs created, preserved, or refilled will advance community policing at the local level, and contribute greatly to the quality of life of the citizens in each community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese federal funds will help GPD recruit and retain law enforcement officers to enhance police presence in our community,\u201d said Guam Delegate Madeleine Z.
