Not that they needed one, but anglers on Rota found one more excuse to go fishing\u2014the Rota Cliff Fishing Derby on Sept. 9-11.<\/p>\n
A once-popular tournament revived by the Marianas Visitors Authority and co-sponsors last year, the event aimed to attract visitors to the tropical island for competition at three well-known fishing sites, As Matmos, Malilok, and Pona Point. The 2011 derby of the event attracted 22 anglers from Saipan, Rota, and Guam.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast month\u2019s derby was another opportunity to draw visitors to Rota,\u201d said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. \u201cRota is a jewel in the string of the Marianas, and this year\u2019s event sponsors worked diligently to prepare for the weekend\u2014the Rota Mayor\u2019s Office, Rota Municipal Council, the Rota Legislative Delegation, and Guam Ambros, Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taking top place in the \u201cBiggest\u201d Category were Andrei Mendiola with a 6.95-lb Titan trigger fish, followed by Isidro Pabeda with a 6.6-lb. Keeled-needle fish, Redentor Devilla with a 6.56-lb red snapper, and Mel Balaan with a 6.07-lb red snapper.<\/p>\n
Mansueto Nava reeled in the \u201cMost Weight\u201d with 49.45 lbs, followed by Rio Cayetano with 33.66 lbs, Brian Richards with 15.04 lbs, and Olen Jacob with 14.82 lbs.<\/p>\n
Cayetano also topped the \u201cMost Variety\u201d category with 30 species, followed by Nava with 25 species, Jacob with 16 species, and Pabeda with 14 species.<\/p>\n
