Roxanne Duenas sparked Saipan Southern High School to a 70-62 overtime victory against Saipan International School in the girls varsity division of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization basketball league last Tuesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.<\/p>\n
The win was the second in two games for the Lady Manta Rays, while the loss evened the Lady Geckos\u2019 record at 1-1.<\/p>\n
SIS will look to bounce back against Kagman High School (0-1) as the season continues on Oct. 25, 4:30pm at the MHS Gym.<\/p>\n
Results of yesterday\u2019s game between KHS and MHS will be published tomorrow.<\/p>\n
SIS got right to work after the tip and managed a 13-9 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Amie Hutchins paced the Lady Geckos with seven points.<\/p>\n
SIS then trudged ahead, 30-15, at halftime as Amber Roberts and Zoe Jewell combined for 11 markers in the second quarter. Czarina Lizama led SSHS with eight points in the first half.<\/p>\n
SSHS\u2019 Daylinne Joseph nailed a pair of 3-pointers for eight points in the third quarter, but SIS stuck to its game plan and maintained a healthy 42-31 margin heading into the final period of regulation.<\/p>\n
Duenas, however, had other plans and took over the game, leading SSHS to a 54-54 deadlock in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.<\/p>\n
Duenas tallied 16 points to go with seven in support from Joseph in the payoff period that tilted momentum to the Lady Rays\u2019 favor.<\/p>\n
SIS actually took an early six-point lead in the extra five minutes, but it was only a matter of time before SSHS worked the ball to Duenas and it did not take her very long to fill the void and then some. <\/p>\n
Duenas racked up 14 more points in overtime as SSHS kept it out of reach by the final buzzer.<\/p>\n
Duenas blew up the scoreboard with a dazzling 32 points in 20 minutes, outscoring SIS\u2019 Hutchins by a dozen markers.<\/p>\n
