Triathletes Mieko Carey and Butch Sublemente and ping pong players Jean Shi, Budhi Gurung, Steve Lim, Todd Montgomery, and David Yang made it to last week\u2019s headlines for their notable performances in separate competitions.<\/p>\n
Carey and Sublemente completed the grueling 2011 XTERRA World Championship in Maui, Hawaii. Two former champions and several others did not finish the off-road triathlon race, while the two Saipan triathletes soldiered on with Carey timing in at 3:20:42 and Sublemente submitting 3:41:07.<\/p>\n
In the 16th Marianas Goodwill Table Tennis Tournament held at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium, Saipan swept the three divisions, beating Tinian and Guam.<\/p>\n
Shi won the singles championship against Tinian\u2019s Luke Lu and then teamed up with Gurung in beating Guam\u2019s Hiromitsu Hamamoto and John Matias in the doubles finals. Saipan also prevailed in the team event.<\/p>\n
Other notable performances last week were Jack Kabiriel and Mamiko Oshima-Berger\u2019s wins in the 2011 Saipan Radar Run and Lawrence Camacho\u2019s victory in the RGA 2-man scramble event.<\/p>\n
Kabiriel was the top male finisher in the 4.7-mile race, timing in at 37:32, while Oshima-Berger ruled the women\u2019s division with a new best time of 38:44. <\/p>\n
Camacho went solo in the 2-man competition and still won against five pairs after shooting a net 56.<\/p>\n
Other on going competitions on Saipan continued last week. In the Shirley\u2019s caging, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan booked back-to-back wins. In the NMIFA youth league, Shirley\u2019s FC handed Matansa its first loss in the girls U15 division, while MP United 1 remained unbeaten in five games in the boys U15. In the men\u2019s league, Wild Bill\u2019s and Inter Godfathers are both undefeated with their identical 2-0 slates.
