[B]WASHINGTON[\/B]\u2014The U.S. Department of Labor announced last week the formal recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as the state apprenticeship agency authorized to oversee the territory\u2019s Registered Apprenticeship system. <\/p>\n
\u201cGuam\u2019s now federally recognized Registered Apprenticeship program will expand career pathways that lead to good jobs for the territory\u2019s workforce,\u201d said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. \u201cParticipants in Guam\u2019s apprenticeship program will receive a nationally recognized credential, and employers will benefit from a highly skilled workforce that is trained to industry standards.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Guam Department of Labor has worked closely with the Office of Apprenticeship of the Labor Department\u2019s Employment and Training Administration to develop a Registered Apprenticeship system. ETA\u2019s recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as a state apprenticeship agency will support the territory\u2019s efforts to improve opportunities for the local workforce through the Registered Apprenticeship \u201cearn and learn\u201d model, which prepares participants for highly skilled careers while allowing them to earn a paycheck.<\/p>\n
In July 2011, Guam Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo submitted formal documentation requesting ETA\u2019s recognition of the Guam Department of Labor as the agency to facilitate apprenticeship programs and agreements.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’re finding every way to bring career opportunities to as many Guamanians as possible,\u201d said Calvo. \u00a0\u201cWe’re finding every way to enhance the workforce with high-paying jobs for Guamanians.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to Guam, ETA\u2019s Office of Apprenticeship has formally recognized apprenticeship agencies in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
