Members of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges yesterday spent hours observing how the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents conducts business and makes decisions for the welfare of students.<\/p>\n
The visiting team is composed of ACCJC associate vice president Norval Wellsfry, University of Hawaii Windward Community College chancellor Douglas Dykstra, University of Guam senior vice president Dr. Helen Whippy, and Kapiolani Community College\u2019s Susan Murata.<\/p>\n
Wellsfry said the team will be making an exit report for the college at the end of their three-day visit. He declined to elaborate and refused to comment on other accreditation issues when pressed. <\/p>\n
Yesterday\u2019s meeting started at 10am. During the 30-minute lunch break, Wellsfry\u2019s team were seen lining up at the school cafeteria. They returned to the boardroom at 2pm when meeting resumed. Throughout the meeting, ACCJC team members were seen individually taking notes as the board discussed several matters. <\/p>\n
NMC is currently on probation due to some commission concerns that they college has yet to address when it was still on show-cause status. The commission will meet in January 2012, during which it is expected to decide on NMC\u2019s accreditation status.<\/p>\n
Galvin Deleon Guerrero, NMC\u2019s accreditation liaison officer, said yesterday that the visiting team has been meeting with various college committees since Monday. <\/p>\n
He said that NMC is now preparing to submit a supplemental report in December that will incorporate the latest developments and progress at the college that were not fully covered in the Oct. 15 report. Among these is the passage of a legislative initiative at the Legislature that affirms NMC\u2019s mission and goals. <\/p>\n
In line with NMC president Sharon Hart\u2019s goal to offer online courses, he said the commission has also made it clear that this should be reflected in the college\u2019s policy. <\/p>\n
NMC, he said, is also working on a self-study report that is due in 2012.<\/p>\n
