For student Bin Lu, her time at NMC not only helped her to learn English but also to pursue her academic goals in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Almost two years ago the Fujian province native left China for the first time mainly to learn English at the Northern Marianas College. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, I couldn\u2019t speak any English and my grammar was terrible,\u201d said Lu. \u201cWhen I started learning English, I made many mistakes. Fortunately, my English instructors Mr. Barry Wicksman, Mrs. Lek Algaier, Mr. Bruce Johnson and Mr. Michael Nurmi were very patient and helped me so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NMC Language and Humanities Department, through the English Language Institute, offers comprehensive instruction to assist individuals improve their English communication skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer experience at NMC helped lay the foundation of her confidence in her English speaking skills,\u201d said Wicksman, Lu\u2019s English instructor and mentor. \u201cIn our island community we are very welcoming, and so you get more of a nurturing and open environment at NMC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lu now reports that her communication skills have improved greatly. \u201cI can speak, write, and listen at the college level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lu added, \u201cNMC is a nice school because it has many excellent instructors and a multi-cultural environment. I was able to make many friends from other cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wicksman noted that Lu\u2019s exposure to people of different cultures will \u201chelp her in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lu\u2019s ultimate goal is to return to China and work for an international company. This fall she plans to attend Baruch College in New York City to work toward a bachelor\u2019s degree in Accounting, and hopes to one day earn her master\u2019s degree in business. <\/p>\n<p>She chose to continue her studies at Baruch College \u201cbecause they have a great business program.\u201d Baruch College is a nationally ranked postsecondary institution known for its business degree programs. Its campus is located near Wall Street and the headquarters of many major companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I didn\u2019t come to NMC I would never have gotten a chance to get to Baruch,\u201d said Lu. \u201cThis has been a positive experience for me both academically and personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud of Lu Bin and have high hopes for her,\u201d said James Kline, Language and Humanities Department chairperson. \u201cWe are also very proud to have played a part in her success and wish her the best with her future plans.\u201d[I] (NMC) [\/I]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years the Northern Marianas College\u2019s English Language Institute has assisted scores of students to develop skills to communicate effectively using the English language.
