Tommy Aldan and Joyce Liv Francisco from Grace Christian Academy\u2019s second grade class under Rachel Epperson captured top awards in this year\u2019s Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture\u2019s poster contest. <\/p>\n
CCAC invited grades 1 to 3 students from public and private schools to make a poster about the coconut in celebration of the 31st Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival last April. <\/p>\n
Aldan will receive $100 cash prize for winning first place and second placer Francisco will receive $75 cash prize from the council. Both of them made a poster of coconut with an island scene during their art class.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll GCA students from grades 1 to 3 made their posters during their art classes in school and I helped them in mounting and framing them,\u201d said art teacher Esther Manzano.<\/p>\n
This is Aldan\u2019s first year at GCA and his first time to win first place in an islandwide contest. \u201cI was really happy to win,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
GCA kindergarten teacher Marilyn Aldan, the mother of Aldan, said, \u201cI was really surprised! I even asked Mrs. Manzano, \u2018What did he do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Francisco, who just enrolled at GCA this school year, was born and went to school in California. This was also Francisco\u2019s first time to win an award as a GCA student. <\/p>\n
Francisco\u2019s parents, Jeffrey and Crizelda Francisco, were both happy and proud of their daughter\u2019s award. \u201cShe was really surprised and never thought that she will win. She never told us about the contest,\u201d said Crizelda Francisco.<\/p>\n
Even though this is their first year at Grace Christian Academy, Manzano has already seen their artistic talents. Both students\u2019 artwork have been displayed a lot of times in the weekly \u201cBest Art Works\u201d for grades 1 to 6 students.<\/p>\n
