{"id":161774,"date":"2012-06-05T18:22:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T18:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bfa61825-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2012-06-05T18:22:00","modified_gmt":"2012-06-05T18:22:00","slug":"bfa61836-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/bfa61836-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Public meetings on 82 coral species"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is conducting five public meetings in June on Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Guam to gather information from the public on a draft management report for 82 species of corals being petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act in 2009. <\/p>\n<p>These informal meetings are an opportunity for the public to comment on the draft management report to ensure all voices have an opportunity to be heard. <\/p>\n<p>The draft management report is an evaluation of the management activities affecting the 82 coral species; including regulatory and conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Meetings are being held on:<br \/>\n* Saipan on Monday, June 11, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Multipurpose Center on Beach Road in Susupe.<br \/>\n* Tinian on Tuesday, June 12, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Fleming Hotel.<br \/>\n* Rota on Thursday, June 14, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Mayor\u2019s Office.<br \/>\n* Guam on Monday, June 18, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Hilton Hotel<br \/>\n* Guam on Wednesday, June 20, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Santa Rita Community Center.<\/p>\n<p>The 82 species of coral being petitioned for listing as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act are reef-building species. Seven occur in the Caribbean and 75 occur in the Indo-Pacific. The 75 Indo-Pacific reef-building species occur in a total of 68 countries, including the United States and its Pacific island states and territories of Hawaii, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.
