{"id":16276,"date":"2011-10-26T08:11:24","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T08:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newspaper.ctsi-logistics.com\/?p=16276"},"modified":"2011-10-26T08:11:24","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T08:11:24","slug":"manglona-presides-over-1st-jury-trial-as-district-court-chief-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/manglona-presides-over-1st-jury-trial-as-district-court-chief-judge\/","title":{"rendered":"Manglona presides over 1st jury trial as District Court chief judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>By Ferdie de la Torre<br \/>\nReporter<\/div>\n<p>Ramona Villagomez Manglona presided yesterday in her first jury trial as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the NMI.<\/p>\n<p>Manglona&#8217;s first jury trial is an immigration fraud case involving Dongjun Li, a 38-year-old Chinese national who allegedly tried to sneak into a Los Angeles-bound flight using fake papers. Assistant U.S. attorney Beverly McCallum is prosecuting the case, while court-appointed attorney Mark Scoggins is counsel for Li.<\/p>\n<p>Manglona&#8217;s first hearing as District Court&#8217;s chief judge was an arraignment on Aug. 4, 2011, that also involved the same defendant and the same lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Manglona was sworn-in as Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the NMI during a private ceremony on July 30.<\/p>\n<p>Manglona, 44, the first female federal judge for the District Court for the NMI, was appointed to a 10-year term.<\/p>\n<p>At yesterday&#8217;s trial, the U.S. government called to the witness stand a Delta Air Lines personnel who narrated to the court how she noticed the fake travel documents that Li turned in at the Saipan International Airport on July 15, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The personnel said that she noticed several misspelled words and a questionable signature in Li&#8217;s documents.<\/p>\n<p>When Saipan Tribune left the courtroom, Raymond Salas, a staff of the U.S. Custom and Border Protection, was still on the witness stand.<\/p>\n<p>The trial will continue today, Wednesday, at 9am.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ferdie de la Torre Reporter Ramona Villagomez Manglona presided yesterday in her first jury&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-16276","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16276","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=16276"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16276\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=16276"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=16276"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=16276"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
