{"id":175288,"date":"2014-01-21T22:29:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/c29c8acf-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2014-01-21T22:29:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T22:29:00","slug":"c29c8adf-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/c29c8adf-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"USS McCampbell visits Saipan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[B]By CHRIS CAVAGNARO[\/B]<br \/>\n[I]Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class<br \/>\nUSS McCampbell Public Affairs[\/I]<\/p>\n<p>The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell arrived on Saipan yesterday for a port visit while on patrol in the 7th Fleet\u2019s area of responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcCampbell\u2019s visit to Saipan is an excellent opportunity for the crew to experience another wonderful port in our AOR,\u201d said Cmdr. Sharif Calfee, McCampbell\u2019s commanding officer. \u201cThe ship visited Saipan in September 2012, and the crew very much enjoyed that liberty opportunity as well as the community service projects with the town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCampbell will participate in a community service project and sporting events, as well as provide ship tours to business and civic leaders during its stay on Saipan, which is the main island of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Community service projects, or COMSERVs, constitute an important avenue to educate McCampbell\u2019s sailors of Saipan\u2019s colorful past and distinct culture while also allowing them to contribute to the community. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity service projects are a very important aspect of any port visit,\u201d said Calfee. \u201cThese projects facilitate fantastic opportunities for the crew to directly interact with the community in a very meaningful, personal, and important way that enhances relationships between our sailors and our hosts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCampbell sailors will also get some well-deserved time off to experience all the island has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to some [time off] with my with my friends on Saipan,\u201d said Fire Controlman 3rd Class Joshua Dent, from Tucson, Ariz. \u201cMuch like every place I\u2019ve visited since I joined the Navy, I can\u2019t wait to go to the beach, try the food and explore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other McCampbell sailors plan to make the most of their time on Saipan through events organized by the ship\u2019s Morale, Welfare and Recreation committee.
