{"id":177279,"date":"2014-08-25T04:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T18:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=177279"},"modified":"2014-08-25T04:00:31","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T18:00:31","slug":"community-joins-becq-snorkels-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/community-joins-becq-snorkels-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Community joins BECQ Snorkels event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 35 children and adults joined the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality\u2019s second free CNMI Snorkels event at the Kilili Beach Park in Susupe.<\/p>\n<p>BECQ partnered with Let\u2019s Move Marianas and Mariana Islands Nature Alliance in an event that saw children led by BECQ\u2019s Ryan Okado, John Iguel, Denise Perez, and Avra Heller snorkel toward the submerged World War II Sherman tank in the beach\u2019s water.<\/p>\n<p>With free snorkels provided after families and their children signed up, the children were encouraged to inspect the many kinds of fish they saw in the water.<\/p>\n<p>According to Heller, the event is to help the community get out and \u201clearn about the marine ecosystem\u201d as well to exercise.<\/p>\n<p>They hope to hold this event every other month and in various beaches around the island like Wing Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Kaipat of Let\u2019s Move Marianas said that instead of video games, youth can learn in depth about what happens in the ocean and \u201cmake use of what you have,\u201d with events like this.<\/p>\n<p>She said that in that past, children always followed their parents to fish or farm.
