{"id":177763,"date":"2014-08-29T04:00:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=177763"},"modified":"2014-08-29T04:00:22","modified_gmt":"2014-08-28T18:00:22","slug":"high-water-use-3-schools-blamed-suspected-leaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/high-water-use-3-schools-blamed-suspected-leaks\/","title":{"rendered":"High water use at 3 schools blamed on suspected leaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A breakdown of total utility cost as a percentage of the Public School System\u2019s total utility costs\u2014for its schools and locations\u2014shows Marianas High School, Hopwood Junior High School, and Tanapag Elementary School leading the pack.<\/p>\n<p>According to PSS\u2019 data, MHS sits at 27 percent of total cost, Hopwood at 13 percent, and Tanapag at 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>PSS finance and budget director Derek Sasamoto described these school\u2019s numbers as \u201coutliers\u201d and are probably due to water leaks.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that Tanapag\u2019s percentage is high in relation to its size.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Tanapag] is one of our smallest schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He suspect that the school\u2019s percentages are due to problems with water leaks, as he found a discrepancy between actual power usage and water used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at water consumption, when you look at percentage of total charges compared to water as a percentage of total, it doesn\u2019t match,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that PSS has communicated with the three schools to look into their respective situations.<\/p>\n<p>Sasamoto noted that most schools average 3 to 5 percent of total PSS costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutlier schools have been identified.
