A breakdown of total utility cost as a percentage of the Public School System\u2019s total utility costs\u2014for its schools and locations\u2014shows Marianas High School, Hopwood Junior High School, and Tanapag Elementary School leading the pack.<\/p>\n
According to PSS\u2019 data, MHS sits at 27 percent of total cost, Hopwood at 13 percent, and Tanapag at 6 percent.<\/p>\n
PSS finance and budget director Derek Sasamoto described these school\u2019s numbers as \u201coutliers\u201d and are probably due to water leaks.<\/p>\n
He noted that Tanapag\u2019s percentage is high in relation to its size.<\/p>\n
\u201c[Tanapag] is one of our smallest schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He suspect that the school\u2019s percentages are due to problems with water leaks, as he found a discrepancy between actual power usage and water used.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you look at water consumption, when you look at percentage of total charges compared to water as a percentage of total, it doesn\u2019t match,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said that PSS has communicated with the three schools to look into their respective situations.<\/p>\n
Sasamoto noted that most schools average 3 to 5 percent of total PSS costs.<\/p>\n
\u201cOutlier schools have been identified. They have been briefed as to what this problem may be, [which is] more than likely water leaks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sasamoto said the schools have been notified of the problem and are making it a \u201chigh priority.\u201d<\/p>\n
PSS has been trying to curb its utility usage to remain in line with its budget.<\/p>\n
The comparative data, which he presented to the Board of Education on Tuesday, will be provided to schools every month.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019ll be comparing\u2026 each other\u2019s usage performance,\u201d he said, adding that it can promote \u201cself-regulation\u201d as schools compare usage between each other.<\/p>\n
\u201c[It] will also allow us to monitor usage, water usage, leaks, and advise them month to month as to what needs to be done, so we\u2019re going to really control this cost as much as we can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
