The Marianas High School Aeronautical Dolphins\u2019 aircraft design for the 2013 Real World Design Challenge competition, which won the overall championship, may potentially see the skies, according to MHS principal Sherlyn Cabrera.<\/p>\n
Anthony Copolla, RWDC\u2019s North America Education program manager told the school in an email: \u201cWe\u2019re considering a pilot in manufacturing some student designs and want to potentially use your team\u2019s winning design from last year for our initial test and prototype.\u201d <\/p>\n
John Raulerson, coach of the Aeronautical Dolphins, said he feels the team has a good chance of being chosen by the RWDC program for this pilot run.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe won it last year so I\u2019m assuming that they\u2019re going to take ours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Caberera called last year\u2019s victory as another \u201copportunity to be awesome\u201d for MHS students. \u201cThey beat all the other states. That is huge,\u201d she said, adding that these students now are \u201ca part of history.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said the students have gotten scholarship offers to go to Embry-Riddle, an aeronautical university\u2014which according to the RWDC website, is worth $50,000.<\/p>\n
Cabrera commended the team\u2019s efforts as they meet as early as 3am in the morning to take part in webinars with Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really want to give a shout out to our students,\u201d she said on their achievements.<\/p>\n
MHS has won the RWDC Pacific Region title for the last three years. In November this year at Washington, D.C., they will defend their title with this year\u2019s aircraft-in-progress, \u201cThe HawkEye 670.\u201d<\/p>\n
Raulerson said he thinks the \u201cHawkeye\u201d is even better than the 2013 champion prototype being considered for manufacture.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has more capability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The aircraft has jet-engine technology and multi-flight controls, among other features, according to Raulerson.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can hover, it can rotate on a vertical axis, it can balance itself on a lateral axis,\u201d Raulerson said, listing some of its dynamics.<\/p>\n
He said the team just has to take care of the electrical component as they are choosing what type of battery to use.<\/p>\n
