{"id":179186,"date":"2014-09-15T04:00:51","date_gmt":"2014-09-14T18:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=179186"},"modified":"2014-09-15T04:00:51","modified_gmt":"2014-09-14T18:00:51","slug":"candidates-set-asnmc-student-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/candidates-set-asnmc-student-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Candidates set for ASNMC student leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only about 10 to 30 percent of Northern Marianas College students participate in voting for the college\u2019s student leaders, according to Queanna Sablan, program manager for the office of student activities and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping that [participation will go up]. We\u2019re going to implement some strategies on how to push to students to practice their vote,\u201d Sablan said.<\/p>\n<p>She said they are hoping to have student volunteers point students around the campus to the student center on voting days as opposed to \u201cjust waiting for students to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The candidates for the Associated Students of NMC are set to be voted in on Sept. 23 and 24 between 9am to 6am at college\u2019s student center.<\/p>\n<p>Eight candidates are running\u2014some for more than one position\u2014for ASNMC president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and its three senator positions.<\/p>\n<p>Only one candidate, Riya Nathrani, who is also ASNMC\u2019s interim president, has been nominated for president.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Nathrani said she believes students \u201cneed to be more involved\u201d with activities on campus and she would like, as president, to push for more entertainment and sports events to help student unwind and cope with their stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our students are non-traditional students and have to deal with stresses outside\u2026 like full-time jobs and supporting a family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Other than sports and entertainment, she plans to have student discussion forums to get personal takes on issues they may be facing at NMC.<\/p>\n<p>She believes ASNMC provides a \u201cchannel of communication from staff to students and back again,\u201d bringing up concerns students may have to college administrators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to make sure students feel a sense of ownership over their education, and that is why I chose to run [for president],\u201d Nathrani said.<\/p>\n<p>Guadalupe Camacho, Jimin Cheon, and Salvi Villanueva are running for vice president.
