{"id":179277,"date":"2014-09-16T04:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T18:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=179277"},"modified":"2014-09-16T04:00:31","modified_gmt":"2014-09-15T18:00:31","slug":"mhs-like-4-5-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/mhs-like-4-5-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"MHS would like 4 to 5 more teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With this year\u2019s increase of about 100 students, Marianas High School needs about four or five teachers to reduce the current student-teacher ratio of 34:1 to a \u201ccomfortable\u201d level, according to MHS principal Sherlyn Cabrera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClass sizes are larger than we like,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want our students to have the best learning experience and not overstress our teachers\u2026 so we\u2019re trying to even out those numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, she said the school has been using substitute teachers to \u201cfill some of the gaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of [the substitute teachers] are working on their certification papers so they can become full-fledged classroom teachers,\u201d Cabrera said, noting that it is their goal to have all teachers certified.<\/p>\n<p>The four to five teachers, according to Cabrera, are needed for subjects like language arts, math, and science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose [subjects] are the probably the big ones,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>MHS currently has 46 teachers for its population of 1,560 students, according to Cabrera. Last year\u2019s population was around 1,450 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student population is significantly larger than last year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the school actually started the school year with 1,600 students but that number decreased, as for whatever reason, students left for other schools.<\/p>\n<p>PSS reported last month that classroom teacher-student ratios continue to increase.
