(Thomas Manglona II)

Marianas High School student Esther Choi is giving hope an ocean way. Choi, a senior at MHS, formed the “Get Involved, Value Everyone” club, or GIVE, in an effort to encourage her peers in school to be a part of the island community by doing something meaningful.

Since March, Choi and club members have raised enough funds to sponsor a 6-year-old girl residing in Africa. The child’s father passed away, and her mother earns only $40 a month. GIVE sends $30 a month to the family hoping that it will provide the child with better food, clothing, and living environment.

“My main hope is that the community will perhaps be affected by the club’s activities of bringing kindness to people,” she told Saipan Tribune.

Choi said she founded the club in 2012 and since then has been working hard to earn money with her classmates by conducting fundraising events like beach cleanups every month.

Choi, who is also the lead mathematician of the winning Real World Design Challenge team that will represent the islands later this year, said she has invested much of her time and energy in the club. “I try to manage my time in order to be involved in everything that is important to me.”

GIVE, in an effort to continue its humanitarian activities, is urging members of the community to donate money or goods to the club that will be sent to the African child’s home.

“Since it is just a group of students in a school who are trying very hard to send money every month, it is not always easy to raise that amount per month,” she explained.

The club has plans in store to increase the number of children that they are sponsoring.

“Any help from the community will be greatly appreciated,” she added. “GIVE is a non-profit organization and school club, so all the money we get will go to the children in Africa.”

Marianas High School student Esther Choi is giving hope an ocean way.
