(Contributed Photo)

Veteran pin busters Robert Talavera and Diana Camacho were named the Northern Marianas Sports Association September Male and Female Athletes of the Month during the group’s meeting Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Talavera and Camacho, both perennial title contenders in various bowling tournaments on Saipan, were uncontested after there were no other nominees due to the limited sporting events on Saipan last month.

The Saipan Bowling Association (SBA) nominated both bowlers after topping the September monthly roll-off of the Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes three weeks ago at the Saipan Bowling Center (SBC) in San Jose.

Talavera registered a four-game total of 824 pinfalls (221, 227, 213, 163) to beat 29 other male bowlers. He competed only in the first day of the weekend tournament and his score survived the onslaught of a chasing pack that included Percy Omechelang and M.J. Aldan.

It was also Talavera’s fourth monthly title and first since winning three straight from January to March.

The longtime SBC employee and a many-time perfect gamer averaged 206 pins in the tournament. He is currently one of the best bowlers in the CNMI.

Camacho, meanwhile, had a four-game tally of 728 rolling to nail her third monthly Queen of the Lanes crown. She won back-to-back monthly plums in June and July. She bowled 161, 193, 224 and 150 in the four games of the two-day tournament for a 182 average.

The SBA is hoping both Talavera and Camacho will be available to lead the CNMI men’s and women’s teams in the 28th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships to be hosted by San Juan City in the Philippines in November.
