(Contributed Photo)

Voices of the Marianas presents What We Really Think, a documentary about a group of Marianas High School students who stage a play without a script. Produced and directed by Barbara Sher, the film will have its world premiere in a complimentary screening on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7pm at American Memorial Park’s Visitor Center theater.

The plot of What We Really Think loosely follows a group of teens who make their way to a party that goes south, triggering epiphanies and revelations within and between the characters on stage. Other than this plot, the only theatrical convention that tied the show together were stage blocking cues arranged by the director. The play, which was originally performed in June last year, was the result of a improv theater that Sher guided students through.

Shot and edited by local educator, dramatist, and filmmaker Galvin Deleon Guerrero, What We Really Think not only showcases the actual performance of the play but also chronicles the rehearsal process and features a moving and insightful discussion with the cast members.

Deleon Guerrero commended the director and the students for an engaging performance. He said, “This improv approach to stage drama could have been a disaster, but not in the capable and trusting hands of Barbara, who was able to tease out genuine acting and inter-acting between cast members. …This made it a joy to shoot and cut and I know people will enjoy seeing the evolution of the play on the big screen.”

Sher has been involved in numerous local theatrical productions, particularly through Voices of the Marianas, which she created and oversees. Outside of theatre, Sher is an international occupational therapist specializing in developing children’s natural love of play to enhance sensory, motor and social skills. In her work with students, ranging in age from pre-school to college, Sher also emphasizes the theater arts as a form of expression to encourage creativity and self-esteem. An advocate of the vanishing art of play, Sher’s books, published in 10 languages, her CDs, international workshops and engaging podcasts have enlightened and inspired parents, caregivers and teachers worldwide . Her CD “28 Instant Songgames” won the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio SNAP award, and Dr. Tony’s Best Vacation Children’s Products.

Due to limited seating, audience members are encouraged to arrive early on Oct. 17.
