The Calvo family donated $3 million last November to the University of Guam\u2019s 21st Century Redevelopment Plan. For the Calvos\u2019 generous gift, the University of Guam recently changed the name of its Field House to the University of Guam Calvo Field House. In Friday\u2019s Pacific Daily News, an article quoted Eduardo \u201cChamp\u201d Calvo who spoke at a UOG ceremony celebrating the new name of the Field House. Champ Calvo said, \u201cWe see that an investment in the university is a direct investment in our future.\u201d Champ Calvo said his uncle Jerry Calvo encouraged the family to donate the money because \u201cGuam\u2019s future depends on the strength and success of the University of Guam.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to UOG Board of Regents chair William Leon Guerrero in the PDN article, the Calvo donation brought the UOG\u2019s Five-Year Plan of raising $30 million for its renovation project to about $7 million.
\nAs a local Saipan woman who is also an instructor at the Northern Marianas College, I believe that investments from the NMI business community in the Northern Marianas College are also \u201ca direct investment in the future of our islands.\u201d I hope the NMI business community will follow the Calvos\u2019 example and give generous gifts to the NMC Foundation, because the future of the Northern Marianas \u201cdepends on the strength and success\u201d of the Northern Marianas College.<\/p>\n
